Stump Grinding Services in Central MN

Stump grinding is the fastest, cleanest way to make a stump disappear. Instead of digging out the stump and leaving a crater in your yard, we grind it down below the surface, so all that's left is a patch of wood chips ready to be filled and reseeded.

In The Woods Tree Care provides stump grinding for homeowners and property owners throughout Central Minnesota, from a single stump in the front yard to multiple stumps on a land clearing project.

What Is Stump Grinding?

Stump grinding is a method of stump removal that uses a machine with a rotating cutting wheel to chip away a tree stump until it's below ground level. The stump is turned into wood chips, often called grindings, and the remaining roots underground are left to break down naturally over time. It removes the stump with far less digging and disruption than pulling it out.

How Stump Grinding Works

1

The stump is cut low. If there's a tall section of trunk left, it's cut down close to the ground first.

2

The grinder goes to work. The cutting wheel moves back and forth across the stump, chipping away the wood a little at a time until the stump is below the surface.

3

The grindings are handled. The wood chips can be left to fill the hole or used as mulch, or hauled away as part of our haul-away services.

4

The area is cleaned up. We clean up the work area and leave your yard cleaner than we found it.

How Deep Is a Stump Ground?

Stumps are ground below ground level, and the right depth depends on what you plan to do with the space. Reseeding grass needs less depth than planting a garden bed or building a patio or shed. Let us know your plans when you request a quote, and we'll recommend the right approach for your project.

Before We Grind: How to Prepare

A little prep helps stump grinding day go smoothly:

Locate underground utilities. Buried lines need to be marked before any grinding. In Minnesota, utility locating is handled through Gopher State One Call (811).

Mark private lines. Sprinkler lines, invisible pet fences, and outdoor lighting wires aren't marked by 811, so point them out to us.

Show us every stump. Let us know about each stump you want ground, including small ones hidden in the grass.

Clear the area. Move vehicles, lawn furniture, and anything else near the stumps.

Tell us about access. Let us know about gates, fences, or tight spaces between the stump and the driveway.

After Stump Grinding: Using the Space

Reseeding or Sodding Grass

Remove most of the wood chips, fill the hole with topsoil, and let it settle before seeding or laying sod. Wood chips mixed into the soil can slow grass growth, so replacing them with good soil gives your lawn the best start.

Planting a New Tree

Plant the new tree a few feet away from the old stump site. The old roots and wood chips can make it harder for a new tree to establish in the exact same spot.

Building a Garden Bed, Patio, or Shed

Stump grinding clears the way for new projects. Share your plans ahead of time so the stump can be ground with that project in mind.

Using the Wood Chips

Leftover grindings make useful mulch around trees and garden beds. If you don't want them, we can haul them away.

Stump Grinding for Land Clearing and Larger Projects

Clearing a lot, building site, or section of acreage often leaves many stumps behind. Stump grinding is part of our land clearing services, so the land you've cleared is truly ready to use.

Getting to the Root of It

In recovery, real change comes from dealing with things at the root, not just what's visible on the surface. Kristie Jones and Travis Moshier learned that firsthand after overcoming addiction, and they built In The Woods Tree Care on that same honest, thorough approach.

Stump grinding is no different. We don't just take care of what you can see. We take the stump down below the surface so it's truly gone. With Travis's 20+ years of tree care experience and a commitment to leaving every job site cleaner than we found it, you can count on work that's done right. Rooted in Safety. Built on Sobriety.

Stump Grinding FAQs

What happens to the wood chips after stump grinding?
The grindings can be used to fill the hole, spread as mulch, or hauled away. If you plan to reseed grass, it's best to remove most of the chips and replace them with topsoil.
Does stump grinding remove the roots?
Stump grinding removes the stump below ground level. The larger roots that remain underground break down naturally over time.
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?
It's best to plant a few feet away from the old stump. The remaining roots and wood chips can make it harder for a new tree to take root in the exact same spot.
Is stump grinding better than stump removal?
For most yards, yes. Stump grinding is faster, cleaner, and less disruptive than digging a stump out completely. Learn more on our stump removal page.
Do I need to call 811 before stump grinding?
Underground utilities should always be located before stump grinding. In Minnesota, you can contact Gopher State One Call at 811. Private lines like sprinklers and pet fences need to be marked separately.
How much does stump grinding cost?
Stump grinding cost depends on the stump's size, the number of stumps, and how easy they are to access. Grinding several stumps at once is often more cost-effective. We provide free quotes.
